Islington has recently got a "new" pub on the high street, in the shape of The Peacock. It's opened up in a space that was once Wetherspoon pub The Angel, itself followed up by an independent pub The Junction. Now it's been taken over by the Urban Pubs & Bar group. They have some interesting sites under their umbrella and they happen to own the Salt Yard group.
So there's reason to expect something relatively decent food-wise here, and to that end the menu reads fairly well. We'd say it's slightly elevated pub fare, but with dishes like seared king scallops, a double smash burger, Steak, oyster mushroom & Guinness pie and more on the menu. There are even Porthilly oysters au natural - so it's far removed from its Wetherspoons days.
The name comes from one of the original pubs that was on this site, apparently from 1564 until 1962. One look at The Peacock will show that it's definitely not in the original building though (Islington took quite a hit during the blitz). Still, a decent pub opening in Angel (and more importantly staying a pub) is a good thing so this should be worth a look.
