30/10/24 - updated with details of the menu and an opening date
The next big revamp of The Savoy is nearly upon us. This time they've been redoing the Thames Foyer, which was initially said to be transformed into the "Savoy Lounge" but now they've decided to call it Gallery.
If you're trying to place exactly where that is, it's right in the centre of the hotel, just outside the Beaufort bar and where the hotel traditionally served afternoon tea.
Now it'll be a restaurant that is inspired by legendary chef Auguste Escoffier (who was a chef in the hotel when it opened 135 years ago). The new menu takes one of his own dishes, Sole Veronique, and has reinvented it as sole tacos - which combines the sole with Bacchus grape and hispi cabbage. So they're playing fast and loose with the Escoffier influence. Elsewhere on the menu, you can expect:
- Cornish lobster rolls with Marie Rose and tangy butterfly sorrel
- Cornish tuna tataki with Isle of Wight tomato and yuzu soy
- Coronated Orkney scallop served with heritage cauliflower and shallot pakora.
- Charcoal grilled organic chicken tikka pie
There will be a classic Arnold Bennett omelette too along stonebaked pizzas which include a smoked Scottish salmon with avocado and caviar version. As for dessert, they'll include ice cream sundaes prepared tableside - The Savoy does like a bit of tableside theatre.
Afternoon Tea, will continue to be a big thing in this space too, but there's also something else opening at the hotel that has us a little more interested. At the same time as the lounge, The Savoy will be opening Scoff, a shop dedicated to scones which you can eat there or pack up to take home. We love the idea of a very English-sounding scone shop, so this is definitely one to watch.
