5/11/24 - updated with a first look at the interiors
The Pantechnicon building fairly recently started out as a Nordic-Japanese dining and shopping hot spot that opened in late 2020 but for the last few months it's been undergoing a major refurbishment. Brace yourselves for a transformation, because there's now a new restaurant and lounge cocktail bar as well as an update to their Japanese restaurant.
As you enter the building, you’ll find Amélie, their brand-new restaurant. It's a Provençale affair across the ground floor and mezzanine, as well as the outdoor covered terrace. There’ll even be a walk-in wine room housing 2000 bottles.
Head chef Steve Raveneau (formerly of Mayfair’s The Arts Club) is in charge of a Mediterranean-influenced menu. Dishes on that include truffle pizzetta, fried squid and sour chilli dressing, wood-fired half lamb loin with coco beans and tomato and seared Dover sole with champagne sauce and caviar
Kappo-Japanese restaurant Sachi has had a big move. Once in the basement, it has now moved up the building to take over the second floor and rooftop terrace. That terrace is one of the best rooftop spaces in the area, and has a handy retractable ceiling to cover all weather eventualities.
There, you'll be able to choose from executive chef Kyung-Soo Moon and Head Chef Joonsu Park's traditional Kappo Ryori menu (refined, multiple courses using seasonal ingredients) or an omakase chef’s table feast before sashaying out to the terrace to enjoy DJs playing into the evening. The rooftop bar will also have a Japanese-spirits focus, including Japanese whiskies and sakes, and cocktails with a Japanese-proverbs theme.
Finally, taking Sachi's former digs down in the basement is Latin-American-influenced LUUM, a cocktail bar with a late-night licence run by Stefano Chila (formerly of Chiltern Firehouse). There’ll be a special LUUM lab where the bar will distil its own spirits using "a Buchi Rotavapor R-300" (hi-tech evaporation equipment, we’re told), as well as a cellar to preserve ageing spirits.
Apart from the mixology, there’ll be a focus on music, with live acts performing throughout the week, where you could settle in one of the four snugs (seating up to 15).
All in all, the first photos make it look like a very impressive-looking development. It sounds well worth heading in for a look, even if you've already been to The Pantechnicon before.
