It's been three years since London's first dedicated Japanese hand roll restaurant (Temaki, in case you're wondering) opened in Brixton. Now we've got a new one to try, this time in Covent Garden. Ukiyo is a counter dining spot in The Yards development in Covent Garden that's serving up temaki and sashmi. The chef behind it definitely knows what he's doing - Konstantin Tskhay used to be head chef at Sumosan.
Ukiyo's menu, like its design, is similarly pared back. Starter options comprise dishes like new-style sashimi salad, truffle tuna tartare and seabass ceviche. There's a tight selection of hand rolls including:
- King crab California
- Salmon Avocado crisps
- Mushroom Medley
- Toro Uni
You can also go for a choice of three hand roll sets or opt for the tasting menu which combines starters, hand rolls and sushi with a matcha choco fondant dessert for £75.
Drinks are similarly all Japenese with a range of sake, whisky and beer on offer - they're serving up a sparkling sake on tap by the first London based brewery. There's also a short cocktail list too all of which use East Asian produce.
Right now there's room for 16 to dine up at the counter, but in September they're opening a downstairs dining room with space for up to 20 more.
