While the UK’s current heatwave may be giving Bangladesh’s temperatures a run for their money, we know the latter country certainly has more reliability in that department. So, when you undoubtedly need warming up again, Camden Market is going to be the place for spicy street-food goodness at new Bangladeshi-inspired Dhakaah.
It’s another addition to the Hawley Wharf development and the sharp-eyed among you may note the restaurant name is a play on Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka. We’ve yet to learn the details of the team or chef behind the venture, but are told it’s part of a push to bring more Bangladeshi culture to the UK, highlighting some often-overlooked aspects of its diversity, update its perception and nudge it into the mainstream.
They say the menu will prioritise free-range British ingredients as well as spotlight some Bangladesh exclusives (look out for Kalijeera rice: small, nutty and delicate). You can expect the following:
- Fuchka: a Bangladeshi version of Pani Puri, filled with spiced potato, chickpeas and spiced tamarind water
- Beef Kathi Roll: heavily spiced mezbani curry wrapped in handmade parotta (flaky flatbread)
- Peyaju: crisp dahl fritters of Shingara shortcrust pastry filled with soft potato and spiced vegetables
- Chicken Roast: free-range chicken leg caramelised with onion, mixed nuts and masala spices
- A variety of kulfi for dessert
The drinks list also features produce from Bangladesh, including the house G&T, flavoured with Bangladeshi lemon (a mashup of lime and mandarin orange in flavour, we’re told). We also like the sound of the Dhakaah Dirty Martini (based on the Indian subcontinent’s giant olive-like fruit called Jolpai). There’s also an own-brand range of beer in the pipeline.
