Until recently, the small No. 23 space next door to Carousel in Fitzrovia had been used for rotating residencies, most recently for Chuck NYC and Poons Wontoneria. Now that's about to change as it becomes a full-time bar, or more specifically a mezcaleria and tostada bar.
Opening somewhat under the radar last month, they've brought in bartender Matteo Vaccargiu (previously Equal Parts, Hide and Pollen Street Social) who, working with Carousel's Joshua Bratt, has created a cocktail list that includes their take on a sazerac, called the Terreno (Jerusalem artichoke-infused rye whiskey with porcini-infused maple syrup and absinthe) as well as their own negroni (The Lost Explorer mezcal, Cynar, fino, Campari and a burnt orange spray).
On the food menu there'll be tostadas where the toppings will change seasonally. To start with, those will include tomato, avocado, guajillo aioli and red onion as well as ceviche, salsa macha, and guacamole. They'll also have other snacks like fried fava beans with habanero and lime.
In all, much like the wine bar next door in Carousel itself, it sounds like it'll be a very useful new drinking spot in Fitzrovia.
