There were fanfares and fire jugglers at the grand opening of Middle Eastern burger joint Salt on Leicester Square this week, but a social media storm is still raging as to which Salt this actually is. The OG Salt was a Dubai food truck turned burger business run by two women Amal Al Marri and Deem Albassam. It became a huge hit for its signature wagyu sliders.
The Salt that's opened in the UK is from a totally different owner, one Qatar-based Ali Ahmed Buhindi. What no-one seemed to be able to get to the bottom of was whether Ali had officially bought the franchise operation for Salt or whether the business was, as many suggested on social, just a copycat. One over-invested fan even did a quick 24 hour trip to Dubai to compare and contrast the two. Finally UAE newspaper The National got the original Salt to confirm that it had no connection with the London opening.
Whatever the true origins of the London restaurant are, there were queues lasting hours over the weekend. On the menu, you'll find the griddled burgers that first won Salt Insta-fame, plus the fan favourite chicken Cheetos burger which has both Cheetos in it as well as a sauce made from Cheetos, fire fries (covered in cheese sauce, fire sauce and jalapenos) and a selection of soft ice creams.
If you're thinking of heading down to try it out, you might want to wait a few days until the queues die down.
