If you've been to Wood Wharf any time over the past couple of years, you'll be familiar with the huge floating restaurant that is Hawksmoor. However, you'll also have noted that there's another similar floating building right beside it. We knew that Hovarda was taking over the lower floor there, and now we know what's coming to the top floor - a grand brasserie called Marceline.
Some of the team behind Hovarda are also involved with Marceline, but it's a very different, and very French affair - something we've noticed is becoming a bit of a trend in London recently.
The restaurant is inspired by both Parisian and New York brasseries and in charge of the menus will be Robert Aikens (who happens to be Tom Aikens' twin). He started as a chef with the Roux Brothers but really grew his career in New York, most recently being one of the team behind the latest iteration of legendary restaurant Pastis. His menu at Marceline does sound very enticing, including dishes like:
- Warm cheese soufflé with gruyère cream and truffle
- Skate Kiev with pomme puree
- Ravioles du dauphine (the sheet of pasta that's very on trend right now)
They're also going to be serving up French classics, so you'll find steak tartare, tuna niçoise, escargots de Bourgogne and French onion soup all on the menu.
In addition to the main restaurant, there's going to be a terrace and a bar called Salon Marceline. The wine list will be predominantly European, and they'll have 30 wines by the glass, so this will also be a very handy new bar if you're in the Canary Wharf area. As for cocktails, they're promising to serve those tableside as well as at the bar and this will be the latest London opening to add mini cocktails to the menu with a "two sip martini" which will come in at £5.
