10/10/24 - updated with the opening date
There really aren't many proper fish and chip shops in the centre of town but of them, The Mayfair Chippy has a pretty decent reputation.
Just steps away from Oxford Street, their Mayfair restaurant has always been a draw for tourists but it helps that it manages to be good too. It might not be quite up to the standard of the average seaside fish and chips but it delivers for the centre of London.
Now the same team are expanding (they've already opened at Bicester) and are looking to follow up Mayfair with another well-heeled area - Knightsbridge. They're taking over what was apparently an outpost of Il Baretto (but we're not sure if that even managed to open). Less than a five-minute walk from Harrods, it's a small space like the original Mayfair Chippy although this has something new in the shape of their Gin Bar (which will transform into a Bloody Mary bar in the morning).
On the food side, they're adding a new breakfast to this location. While the Butcher's breakfast is a more traditional version, there's also a Fishermen's breakfast which includes a cod sausage to change things up. As for the rest of the menu, expect something similar to the original. So you'll have your standard fried cod or haddock, alongside other dishes like a fish finger butty, lobster macaroni cheese, battered prawns, kedgeree scotch eggs and more. The original also has an "Afternoon Sea" which is a chilled seafood platter to share.
And as for that name? Even though it's in Knightsbridge it'll still be called "The Mayfair Chippy".
