If we told you there’s a new all-day dining concept coming to the art’otel, you might be thinking of Battersea Power Station, but we have some double-barrelled news today: Hoxton is also getting an art’otel; its ground floor will house The Brush Grand Café, with upstairs home to the Brush Lounge & Cocktail Bar.
If you’re a fan of whimsical grand cafes a là Vienna and Paris, then you’ll feel at home at The Brush, with its elegant floor-to-ceiling window space overlooking Old Street. Though if you’ve visited any of the other art’otels across Europe (Amsterdam, Zagreb, Rome, Berlin and Cologne), you’ll know there’s an emphasis on large-scale contemporary works from the hotel’s signature artist, British multimedia creative Dean Stockton (aka D*Face). You won’t miss his huge bronze paintbrush sculpture outside the entrance, and his 40m murals adorn the walls of both floors inside. There’s also a 70-seater terrace planned for warmer weather later in the year.
At the 70-cover restaurant, the European-cuisine-focused menu spans breakfast to late-night dining and cocktails. Executive chef Ryan Matheson (formerly of Southbank’s Sea Containers) is keeping things simple yet refined, and you can expect the following:
- Confit duck, bean cassoulet rouille
- Beef tartare
- French onion soup
- Whole grilled sea bass, sea herbs, beurre noisette
- Whole roast Josper-grilled chicken with garlic and red onion jus
- Basque cheesecake with strawberry compote
The first-floor Brush Lounge & Cocktail Bar is the place for snacks and live music at night, with cocktails created by Alessandro Mannello. We see ourselves sitting by the absinthe fountain debating the merits of 50 Shades of Champagne (vodka, Cointreau and Champagne, topped with Champagne) versus the Lee-LAY (rosé reduction, peach, Lillet, apricot and white grape soda).
