If you've ever come up against the phrase "dark kitchen" (also called ghost kitchens) you might know it's all about those delivery services for operators who don't actually have a physical restaurant. These are kitchens sometimes housed in shipping container villages around London and aren't the most soul-enhancing places to work in.
A new development in Acton is looking to change that in a big way. Called Portal, this bizarre cubic building is being designed to house 250 kitchens inside. While they'll be delivering to the neighbourhoods around them, they are also developing a food court downstairs which will essentially have the largest amount of choice any UK food court has ever seen. In theory, you'll be able to order from a terminal in the court, and your dinner will be sent down to you from any of the dark kitchens in the building.
The ambitious endeavour has just had its planning approved, so things are moving forward and we'll bring you more details about who's involved with the kitchens at a later date.
Is this the future of food courts? And is it better than being in a shipping container? We'll have to see.
