Updated 11/4/23 with the opening date
Italian food purists keep scrolling, because what we're about to write may trigger you. A new cafe is opening in Peckham that will be embracing the "authentically Britalian" trend.
Café Britaly is the first project between chef Alex Purdie and Richard Crampton-Platt. Alex arrives here having most recently been senior chef at Bouchon Racine and, before that, Bocca di Lupo while Richard was ops director for both Bocca di Lupo and its ice-cream offshoot Gelupo.
If you haven't come across Britalian food before, other places you might try it in London include Luca in Farringdon and Manteca in Shoreditch. Think either Italian food made with British produce, or Italian-inspired dishes.
On the menu here at Café Britaly you'll find dishes like spaghetti carbonara made very non-traditionally with non-trad cream and topped with a greasy spoon-style fried egg. There'll also be a full Britalian breakfast which will feature fennel sausages, fried pizza dough, and beans inspired by the Tuscan dish fagioli all’uccelletto.
The cafe is taking over the site that used to be Supa Ya Ramen on Rye Lane. The space sounds like it'll be an Instagrammer's dream with a mid-century-style interior riffing off the old 1950s-style Italian-run British cafés with art posters on the wall, green lino floors and banquette seating for up to 40 diners.
