As anyone who's been on public transport over the past year would already know, Fridays haven't been the same in London since the Pandemic. With so many workers doing a truncated week in the office, Thursday evening has become the default Friday, with the final work day of the week notably quiet.
But what might be surburbia's gain is central London's disaster and finally Sadiq Khan is taking action. From March he's trialling a new ticket pricing structure that will see all Friday tube fares being charged as off-peak.
In a statement the mayor explained the decision. "London has really bounced back since the pandemic, but the lack of commuters returning on Fridays is a clear exception - with a major knock-on effect on our shops, cafes and cultural venues.
"That's why I've asked TfL to trial off-peak fares on Fridays, and I encourage Londoners to get involved."
"There’s no doubt that Fridays have suffered as a result of changes to working patterns since the pandemic and hospitality businesses have felt that loss of commuter trade," said hospitality spokesperson Kate Nicholls. "I hope we’ll see positive results from the trial."
