Should we read something into the fact that Covent Garden visitors' tastes are leaning away from smashed avos and more towards Champagne? That's one conclusion to be drawn from the closure of Avobar which has been replaced by Bar du Champagne from the same owner (although Avobar is apparently moving to a central London location next year).
This new bistro and bar is taking up two floors of the building on Henrietta Street and devoting them to all things sparkling. There'll be difficult-to-source cult Champagnes, classic cuvees and top tier Spanish Recaredo cava on offer. If bubbles aren't your thing the still wine list also holds some interesting options such as Georgian Saperavi and Armenian Areni Noir.
No-one wants to drink on an empty stomach, so menu options here will include:
- Truffled Croque-Monsieur
- Steak tartare with lardo toast
- Duck rillettes with sour cherry on toast
- Coq au vin with saffron pomme puree
If you're in the mood for a pre-Christmas get together the bar will have a semi-private dining space that sounds perfect. Plus there's a heated outdoor terrace too.
