London's boutique bakery boom shows no signs of a downturn. We first became aware of Astrid Bakery during lockdown. Run by former fashion journalist Charlotte O'Kelly who retrained at Le Cordon Bleu after starting a family, its luxury breakfast box deliveries were a massive hit in those dark times and have been doing great business ever since.
But, like most home bakeries, there comes a time to move out of your own kitchen and expand the business. That time is now and Charlotte's getting ready to open a bakery in Muswell Hill. "It's been a long time coming, so I'm very happy to be able to say it's happening," she told Hot Dinners.
The new bakery on Alexandra Park Road will be mainly takeaway, although she's hoping to add some outdoor seating eventually. During the morning she'll be serving up her popular vienoisserie along with hot drinks and switching to foccacia sandwiches for lunchtime.
With the opening upon us, she can confirm that her amazing cinnamon buns made with cultured butter and Wildfarmed flour will be on the menu along with croissants, stripey chocolatines and baguette sandwiches. You'll also be able to order celebration cakes and she'll still be doing her breakfast box deliveries.
"Small batch is the keyword for us," Charlotte says. "We are deliberately staying small in order to stay true to our artisan roots. We want to grow organically."
