Following the news that Le Gavroche is closing later this year, we have news of another big closure, Marcus Wareing's restaurant at The Berkeley. The restaurant will be shutting just after Christmas.
The TV chef has announced that he'll be closing Marcus, his Michelin-starred restaurant at the hotel. The restaurant has been in the hotel for 20 years and managed to get up to two Michelin stars (although it lost one of them in 2018). For a long time, it was at the forefront of high-end dining in London but in recent years it perhaps hasn't been in the limelight as much.
It's had a few changes over the years, once being named Marcus Wareing at The Berkeley before changing to its simpler current name along with a change to a slightly less formal setting. One of the biggest chefs to come out of the restaurant has been Chantelle Nicholson who went on to success with Apricity in Mayfair.
Wareing himself says; "The Berkeley has provided me with the most extraordinary platform over the last 20 years. As a chef and restauranteur, it’s allowed me and my team to create some incredible and lasting memories. However, it’s now time for me to move on. I am not retiring quite yet, though - not at all. I’m ready for a new and exciting chapter to begin. I will update on our plans for 2024 in due course." So in more promising news, we should expect to see something new from him before too long.
We're told that the closure is because "Marcus Wareing and the hotel have mutually agreed on a change of direction". We'll have to wait to see what The Berkeley has got planned to put in its place.
In the meantime, if you're a fan of the restaurant, you have until Christmas to plan your final visit.
