Hainan House brings Hainanese cuisine to Islington's Upper Street

Hainan House brings Hainanese cuisine to Islington's Upper Street

A Hot Dinners exclusive

They've been running pop-ups and supperclubs throughout the year (including one at Carousel), but now Hainan House are getting ready to settle down in Islington. They've taken over the space that was once Street Greek on Upper Street.

Set up by Sunny Wu, Hainan House aims to showcase the Southern Chinese cooking that she grew up eating. The menu, created with head chef Irene Hua, aims for their own take on that cuisine using influences from the Qiong Cuisine of Southern China, plus the Canton, Hakka, and Min regions

An example of what's on offer includes:

  • Steamed aubergine with black vinegar dressing and fermented chilli
  • Tiger skin quail's eggs with papaya, red chilli and coriander
  • Classic Hún rice noodles with beef jerky and fermented mustard greens
  • House-style poached poussin, with pickled pineapple, ginger and garlic
  • Yi Bua sticky rice cake with papaya jam and toasted coconut

As for drinks, there will be a short list of wines and beers and they're also promising Hainan green and black loose tea alongside Hainan coconut milk. it sounds like a very promising new addition for Upper Street which is always in need of something a little more unique and will sit nicely alongside spots like Hong Kong restaurant and Tofu Vegan.
