Chef Sertaç Dirik is leaving Mangal 2

News comes today of big changes afoot at Mangal 2, where chef Sertaç Dirik has announced that he's leaving the restaurant, apparently with plans to open his own place.

It's a story that seems like The Bear come to life and will be almost eerily familiar to anyone who's been bingeing the series. Diric has been around the Mangal 2 kitchen from childhood. He started cooking there, then left to spend time in Copenhagen working at 108 before coming back to take over the family business as chef, together with his brother Ferhat as restaurant manager. They then proceeded to change it all into something quite different.

In the past three years, they completely revamped Mangal 2. They started serving a menu that was very different from before, blending traditional dishes with innovative techniques and presentation, swiftly becoming one of the most celebrated restaurants in London and a big hit with the critics. Jay Rayner called it "serious and inventive cooking" while Molly Codyre in The Independent said that its goal was to "redefine what Turkish cuisine is".

According to an interview with The Standard, Diric is getting ready to open his own restaurants. All eyes will be on whatever he plans next.
