25/7/23 - updated with the opening date
If thoughts are turning to sunny Greek getaways, then we have the ideal warm-up for you in the form of Athens-inspired food in a new London location. After almost 10 years in business, popular street-food market stall Souvlaki Street is opening its first bricks-and-mortar home on East Dulwich’s North Cross Road. The restaurant will have a new name too - Evi's.
If you’re an East Dulwich regular, you’ll already be familiar with the sight of stuffed pita breads in hands from happy shoppers at North Cross Road Market every Saturday, where Souvlaki Street used to serve its hearty fare.
Founders Evi Peroulaki and Conor Mills, who formerly worked in publishing, started serving souvlakis at Hackney’s Chatsworth Road Sunday Market in 2014 before trading at various street-food markets across London, including four years at Pop Brixton until September 2022. After much uncertainty and pivoting during the pandemic with DIY kits, Souvlaki Street are happy to have finally found a permanent home.
The restaurant will be their take on the Greek dishes that you would find in tavernas and your typical souvlazidiko’s (the Greek name for a traditional sit-down souvlaki/grill restaurant) all over Greece.
While there will be souvlaki, the new restaurant will offer much more besides, with a big focus on mezze sharing plates. We're told that dishes will include handcut chips made with Cyprus potatoes, freshly made dips, grilled whole kalamari, courgette croquettes, lamb, chicken and pork from the Yorkshire dales, slow-grown on small sustainable farms and some of their favourite Greek salads
On top of that, the wine list will be exclusively Greek.
Thanks to Nigel Hogan for alerting us to the opening.
