Well this is sad news indeed. Last night chef Sven-Hanson Britt put a post up on Instagram announcing the closure of his Nine Elms restaurant Oxeye. It made for heartrending reading.
"I’ve tried everything in my power to save the restaurant, to keep fighting, to regain control, to fundraise, to remodel, to regroup, to reimagine, to restructure, but nothing could be done," the chef said. "I poured my whole heart into that space and I’m so, so grateful to all those that came through the doors - both sides of the pass."
Down but not out, he added: "There will be something new coming, hopefully soon, for now I just need to say goodbye to Oxeye 1.0. Soon I will be ready to add something a bit more interesting to the staid & vapid restaurant scene that London is currently plagued with."
We loved Oxeye when we visited (you can read the Test Drive here), so we look forward to seeing what Sven moves on to. This is the second big closure down at the huge Embassy Gardens development now in recent months, with Homeboy closing its bar there this spring.
