Everyone likes a positive story in these challenging times, and we can bring you something truly groundbreaking: a Kickstarter campaign that has set a new global record for restaurant fundraising. Jazz musician YolanDa Brown OBE DL along with music manager and entrepreneur Adetokunbo ‘T’ Oyelola are bringing a new restaurant called Soul Mama to Islington Square, thanks to the £248,148 they have raised from supporters.
This not just sets a new bar for Kickstarter, but it brings a unique restaurant and live-music venue to North London, which is thrilling news for lovers of jazz, gospel, soul and reggae in particular.
On the food front, all ingredients will be ethically sourced and the restaurant will offer a fusion of South American, Caribbean and African cuisines, and there’s another clue in the Soul Mama name; the menu will feature recipes from mothers of the world who have passed their recipes down through the generations. So, this sounds like it’s going to be a bit of education for your palate and perhaps even some nostalgia.
It’s not too late to get your name on the Founder’s Wall if you fancy being part of restaurant-crowdfunding history, with options ranging from pre-booking a meal to buying tickets to YolanDa’s first-ever concert at the venue to lifetime membership.
