London sake brewery Kanpai are moving their taproom and kitchen to Bermondsey

27/9/23 - updated with details of the launch

Seven years after they opened their taproom and kitchen in Peckham, London sake brewery Kanpai are on the move. Over the past few years, the self-taught brewers Tom and Lucy Wilson built up a loyal audience for their small-batch craft sake, opening first their taproom followed by a kitchen opposite where they ran a series of residencies serving up Japanese small plates.

The brewery's new home will be on Bermondsey Beer Mile by Maltby Street Market. Here the taproom will feature 10 sake taps and the larger space will allow them to feature a glass viewing platform where drinkers can actually see the sake being made. There are also plans to offer brewery tours and a hands-on brewing experience.

In addition to the sake, there will be seasonal Japan-inspired cocktails, collaborative craft beers and Japanese spirits.

As with Peckham, the new Southwark home will feature a kitchen serving an izakaya-style menu with Tai Nguyen, former Head Chef at Hakata and Bone Daddies, in charge. The food is still to be revealed at the time of writing, but expect sandos, gyoza and udon on the menu.
