14/6/23 - updated with the opening date
If you’re already a fan of Imad’s Syrian Kitchen, which found a permanent home in Soho’s Kingly Court in 2021, then things are about to get even bigger and better. The restaurant is reopening in a larger space at Kingly Court and will also serve Syrian breakfasts for the first time, along with a brunch option at weekends.
If you need us to rewind on the Imad story a bit, he’s both a chef and restaurateur, originally hailing from Damascus in Syria. After fleeing the country when his two restaurants were destroyed in the war, he ran a successful pop-up on London’s Columbia Road before crowdfunding for his first permanent site.
Both his restaurant decor and menu are tributes to his homeland and have touched a chord with diners who are keen supporters of Imad’s humanitarian-focused ethos (he taught cooking skills to refugees as he made his way across Europe to the UK), and his fundraising for charities; most recently he raised £5,000 in 24 hours for Choose Love (his long-time charity partner) towards those affected by the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. Expect further events, special dinners and supper clubs in the name of good causes.
In the new, bigger space in Kingly Court, you can expect brand-new dishes (some of which are entirely vegan) along with his usual favourites, including:
- Syrian moussaka served with fried aubergines and pomegranate molasses
- Lamb biwa: a minced-lamb burger baked in the oven served with cherry tomatoes, onion, Turkish peppers, chives and parsley
- Hummus bil zayt: dried chickpeas served with dukkah and parsley
- Konafa Nableseh: a dessert vermicelli made of sugar syrup and akawi cheese
- Eawaama: fried doughnut of dates and molasses
On the drinks front, there’ll be a list of (mostly low-intervention) wines from Eastern Europe and the Levant Basin.
