24/8/23 - updated with the opening date
Last summer we brought you news of a special menu operating at Caravan's roastery in Islington. It was a collaboration between New York fashion photographer Dan Martensen (recent commissions have included Julianne Moore and Winona Ryder) with Caravan's head baker Jack Ponting.
The idea was to give Londoners an opportunity to try NYC-style bagels. As Dan explains: "Whilst I have huge respect for London’s East-End style bagels, I was disappointed not to be able to find a decent New York bagel anywhere when I moved to the UK a few years ago. Fast forward and we’re over the moon that Londoners seem to love our remedy to that."
Clearly, the endeavour must have been a success because the duo are now gearing up to open a permanent bagel bar in Primrose Hill. They've taken over the old butchers shop on Regent's Park Road where they'll be baking up a range of bagels on the premises daily.
Customers will be able to choose from poppy, plain, sesame, garlic and onion bagels (and pumpernickel and Rainbow versions on weekends) with a range of cream cheese ‘schmears,’ including scallion or dill. A few of the options on the menu include:
- The Works (cream cheese with lox, onion, capers, lemon and tomato)
- BECSPK (bacon, egg, cheese, salt, pepper, Ketchup)
- BLT (bacon, lettuce and tomato)
If you fancy grabbing and going it'll be open seven days a week, and there will also be room in the shop to eat in as well as terrace tables out at the front.
