For the past month, Bellanger has been closed for what turns out to be a major overhaul. If you know the restaurant either from its Bellanger days or, before that, Browns you'll be aware that the space has always had the bar running down the right-hand side of the room on a different level.
As it gets ready to reopen, we've been hearing more details about what work has been done and the space has been entirely made over. The biggest change is to the bar. That's been brought to the front of the restaurant, to the left as you come in, so it'll look out over Islington Green. They've laid a marble floor in this area and given it a new bar complete with pewter top. Plans to make this a vibey place to come and drink include DJs at the weekends. There will also be a special bar snacks menu.
The rest of the restaurant has been tweaked so that it's all going to be on one level and they've paid the private dining room particular attention.
The menu has been given an overhaul too, switching the focus to South-Mediterranean influences. Some of the previous dishes will remain but new dishes will include:
- Carpaccio of candy beetroot with caramelised walnuts
- Andalusian fish stew
- Orzotto Primavera’ with asparagus, peas, broad beans, and wild garlic
It's a third act for Bellanger which was opened and closed by Corbin & King before being reopened as the French brasserie it currently is. You can expect its many regulars to be first through the door when it opens to see what this new iteration of the restaurant has to offer.
