Crouch End residents have been reacting to the news that one of the area's longest-running restaurants, Banner's, is getting ready to close its doors for the final time.
Owner Juliette Banner made the announcement on Instagram yesterday saying: "I could write this message with a heavy heart, but instead it’s filled with an overwhelming feeling of gratitude and accomplishment.
"I was 27 when I bought the old kebab shop that then became Banner’s. It’s been 31 years of darn hard work for everyone, innumerable laughs and lifetime friendships formed. Very importantly, it’s still hugely enjoyable. A good point to exit!"
The restaurant, which has been a mainstay of Crouch End for decades ("It's my favourite restaurant in the world," says former resident Simon Pegg), was opened back in 1992 by Juliette and her then-husband DJ Andy Kershaw. With a menu inspired by Juliette's travels around the world, it became most famous for its jerk chicken, Goan curries and enormous fry-ups.
As you might imagine, locals are not taking the news all that well.
"Banner’s is the one thing that has been consistent in Crouch End. We were so relieved that you made it through covid. We were there just a few weeks ago and my husband commented, “at least we always have Banner’s to make us feel at home” we are so gutted as I’m sure many are". - coley.303
"Sad news. We all want our favourite places to last forever". - walter_purkis_fishmonger
But, there is one upside, they've given everyone plenty of time to come in and enjoy a meal before they go, with the final service planned for some time in September.
