Almost a year ago we reported that the dream of Greggs to be running a 24/7 restaurant on Leicester Square had come up against hard reality in the form of Westminster Council's licensing committee. Worried that a late night purveyor of sausage rolls and steak bakes would be a "hot spot for late night disturbances and anti-social behaviour" the council restricted opening hours to between 6am and 11pm.
Well, it seems that sense has prevailed on the eve of a court case to settle the issue. Westminster agreed to allow the company to open until midnight from Sunday to Wednesday, and until 2am from Thursday to Saturday.
The ruling is pretty specific, only allowing Greggs to sell hot food that has been cooked elsewhere and reheated. That means that late-night revellers will be able to enjoy a sausage roll or a sandwich, but not wedges or goujons.
