Crunch are bringing their banging brioche sandwiches to Spitalfields

A Hot Dinners exclusive

Last summer, a trio of sandwich obsessives began making a name for themselves with the Crunch pop-up in Shoreditch. The group comprises Alexandre Yonan and Michael Medovnikov, who'd met at college, and chef Joni Francisco. Francisco trained under Alexis Gauthier at Gauthier Soho and Nuno Mendes at Chiltern Firehouse before becoming executive chef for the Experimental Group. It took a random meeting between all three outside a London nightclub for the idea for Crunch to be born.

Their first pop-up, at the Prince Arthur pub by Old Street, is how we first heard about the group and their 'experimental brioche sandwiches'. Now they're getting ready to open their first permanent space, inside Old Spitalfields Market. "It's an area that attracts foodies from all over the world," Alex told Hot Dinners, "so it's the perfect home for our beloved sandwiches."

So, what can you expect from the Spitalfields stall? There will be four sandwiches on the menu, all made using their 'crunch golden brioche'.

  • Michaels Chicken - southern-fried chicken cutlet, shredded lettuce, baby pickles, homemade dill aioli.
  • Truffle Patty Melt - truffle injected Angus beef patties, red Leicester cheese, crispy onion marmalade and black truffle mayonnaise.
  • Donald’s Duck - slow-cooked Gressingham duck leg, mixed leaves, banana shallots, crispy onions and smoked apple sauce.
  • Togarashi Mushroom - fried oyster mushrooms, miso marinated vegetables, nori and shichimi Togarashi mayo.

Alongside those, they're promising a range of sides and drinks. Sounds like Spitalfields folk - and their Broadgate neighbours - will soon have a great new place to hit up for a proper sandwich.
