This summer there's another enticing reason to visit Borough Market, with word of West African chef Adejoké (‘Joké’) Bakare’s forthcoming pop-up at Globe Tavern. The two-month residency, Joké & Friends, will act as something of a taster before the opening of her new Chishuru restaurant in Fitzrovia, which we told you about recently.
Joké will not only be bringing to market a Nigerian menu inspired by her childhood, but she'll also be doing some exciting collaborations with some of her food friends. Expect appearances from Anna Higham (formerly of Lyle’s fame and the forthcoming Quince Bakery), Guan Chua, who runs the popular Nyonya Supper Club, Sirichai Kularbwong from Leytonstone hot spot Singburi, Chloe-Rose Crabtree from Honey Pie Baking and more.
Dishes come at a set price for three courses (including dessert), and you can try out the following:
- Abacha Mmri: cassava, young coconut and Scottish hand-dived scallops with coconut dressing
- Sinasir: rice and coconut pancakes with summer squash puree
- Celeriac cake served with pumpkin-seed sauce, endive and rice
- Chilli crab with steamed abloh (fermented corn and rice)
- Brik pastries with Wookey Hole cheese & herb filling
Drinks-wise, there’ll be a wine list featuring independent French producers (notably Beaujolais and the Loire), cocktails and soft drinks.
