There’s a new place in Soho for all your Korean-BBQ needs, with Chungdam now open on the former YMing Chinese restaurant site.
Well-travelled destination diners might twig that it’s named after one of Seoul’s major food districts, Cheongdam-dong, and at Chungdam restaurant it’s about both modern and traditional Korean cooking techniques. Expect plenty of interactive dining experiences in a sleek space for 35 diners, with green marble-topped tables, plenty of dark wood and the occasional piece of antique Korean furniture to catch your eye.
In addition to the DIY BBQ offerings that feature some prime beef (think A3–A5 Wagyu, Angus ribeye, Chateaubriand, fillet mignon), as well as Iberico pork rib, pork belly, and salted chicken thighs, there’ll be the following on the launch menu.
- Japchae: vermicelli noodles with prime beef and vegetables
- Seafood pancake: Korean-style mixed seafood pancake
- Beef tartare: raw prime beef with pear, dressed in sesame oil
- Kimchi Namul: refined kimchi served with seasoned vegetables
Don’t miss the Pyeonbaek steam box, which, they assure us, is rare on London menus, and will potentially have its first-ever outing in Soho. It’s a three-tiered box made from Hinoki wood, which creates a unique flavouring when steaming meats and vegetables, given it yields five times more phytoncides than other woods. It has a tray of broth that captures all the juices, which can also be consumed like a soup with noodles and vegetables.
There’ll also be cocktails, rice wine and Soju-based drinks, alongside a list of world wides, spirits and beers.
