12/04/23 - updated with opening date
It was one of the most impressive spaces in the St. Pancras Renaissance as The Gilbert Scott and now, after that closed in mid-2021, the restaurant is to be reborn as Midland Grand Dining Room.
Allegra chef Patrick Powell, who was also behind the menu at the other recently-revamped restaurant in the hotel, Booking Office 1869, is taking over. The Booking Office revamp led to a pretty spectacular remodelling of that restaurant and we should be seeing something quite similar here as the same designer, Hugo Toro, is in charge.
We're told the design "honours the Victorian origins of the room whilst updating it for a cosmopolitan, contemporary audience." Expect an orange hue throughout which will be quite different from its previous guise.
As for the food, that will include dishes like:
- Crab & elderflower pain perdu,
- Chicken liver parfait with a truffle & Madeira jelly
- Welsh lamb with Pommes Anna, ratatouille & whipped aubergine
- The very promising-sounding Epping honey madeleines
They'll be keeping the separate bar at the front (always very handy when you're in the King's Cross area) which will be led by Jack Porter (he also opened the bar at Booking Office 1869). We'll add more details about what to expect from the bar as we get them.
