Dunamis restaurant in Soho takes the energy crisis as inspiration

Update - 12 noon, 1/4/23 - Yes this was indeed this year's April Fool. Sorry (not sorry). See all our previous April Fools here

There's no doubt that the current energy crisis is an ongoing nightmare for those in the hospitality industry, with bills rocketing for restaurants and bars across London. But one new opening has decided to take the cost of energy bills as inspiration to try something a little different.

Dunamis (it's the Greek word for power) will do its best to be a restaurant run on next to no energy at all. To that end, all the food they serve will be uncooked and most drinks will be presented at room temperature. In the evenings, instead of turning on the lights, the restaurant will be lit by candles. Diners will also be advised to dress warmly as there will be no heating either.

"Obviously, we'll have to refrigerate food, and run things like card payments and security on electricity," says owner Daisy Palfloor, "but in the main, we're trying not to use energy at all."

To that end, the restaurant's chef has been tasked with a menu that will entice diners through the door, with much of the dishes being raw, cold or temperate. As for drinks, red wine will be the main offering, and if you want ice in your cocktail you'll have to pay an energy 'surplus'.
