Rising from the ashes, Bando Belly is back. If you were a fan of their deep-fried Oreos and ‘the Buff Ting’ (a twice-fried chicken burger), you’d be aware of a tragic fuse-box-related fire that destroyed their Peckham outlet in May 2022. Well, let your fried-food fantasies free again, they’ll be opening in Pop Brixton, thanks to a successful fundraising campaign, loyal local communities and the hard graft from founder Naz Ramadan who has been doing kitchen residences and pop-ups to help support her staff.
If you’re new to the fuss, after launching in London in January 2021, Bando Belly soon gained a cult following with its ‘soul-food fusion’ offering. Naz coined the portmanteau ‘Jerkish’ (Jamaican and Turkish) to describe her heritage and the street food’s multilayered influences of Caribbean, American and Southeast Asia via South East London.
In terms of the menu, the old favourites will be back (the aforementioned deep-fried fixtures, alongside fusion burgers, lobster mac ‘n’ cheese balls) as well as some new dishes, such:
- Ban Ban Noodles: beef, chicken or mushroom along with noodles tossed in a secret spicy sauce
- Bando Baggys: a seafood boil with tiger prawns, corn, baby potatoes, miso garlic butter and a choice of sauce
And of course, they’ll be showcasing and supporting community talent, in the form of local bands and DJs playing live at the venue.
