Southwest Londoners have cause to rejoice because there’s a revolution coming to Parsons Green. At least, a new restaurant called 1910 is opening, and it’s no accident it was named after the year of the Mexican Revolution.
The good people of Balham are already one step ahead, having had a 1910 Cantina on their doorstep since April 2020. Its opening was much less low-key than originally planned, scuppered by a pandemic-enforced takeaway and delivery service at first. So, this is your chance to give this independently opened venture a proper launch as planned.
It’s no secret that Mexicans like a party and there’ll be many fiestas held here throughout the year, with live mariachi bands, dancing and face painting to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, Día de la Independencia (Mexican Independence Day) and Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).
All the food is inspired by co-owner and chef Mauricio Rico’s family recipes. On the menu (which is predominantly gluten-free) will be both dishes loved over at the Balham outlet, as well as brand-new creations and weekly specials. You can expect the likes of:
- Atun Tostada: Crispy corn tortilla topped with yellowfin tuna tartare with lettuce, cucumber, tamari dressing, chipotle mayo, avocado sauce, micro-coriander and a wedge of lime
- Cochinita Pibil: Two soft corn tortillas filled with slow-roasted pulled pork marinated in achiote and habanero salsa with pickled red onion, coriander and a wedge of lime
- Birria Quesadilla: Traditional birria (slow-cooked beef), marinated in a secret blend of Tijuana spices, melted with cheese, topped with red chilli, coriander, onion, a wedge of lime and birria gravy.
Naturally, there are margaritas (classic, Tommy’s or spicy & mezcal), as well as Micheladas and even Mexican wine. They’re also quite proud of their collection of over 160 agave spirits from small artisanal producers in Mexico, one of the largest agave lists in this part of London. Salud.
