It feels like it’s only been a minute since Roketsu launched its Japanese kaiseki restaurant in London and now there’s news that it’s opening a downstairs dining option in the same space. Called Bo-sen, it’s a very intimate affair, seating just eight, and will be quite different in approach to Roketsu, which will still run its acclaimed 10-course kaiseki experience upstairs, a set menu that changes monthly.
At Bo-sen, it’s à la carte, with the menu changing daily, and also created by head chef and owner Daisuke Hayashi (who trained at three-Michelin-starred Kikunoi restaurant in Kyoto), based on his whims and the best ingredients to hand. Dedicated Japanophiles (or even tea afficionados) will appreciate that the name Bo-sen comes from a site in Kyoto’s Daitokuji Temple: it’s the tearoom of one of Japan’s last great tea masters, Kobori Enshu.
Bo-sen’s menu, although streamlined, will be just as meticulously prepared as what’s happening upstairs, and includes the likes of:
- Lobster tempura
- Charcoal-grilled Kagoshima Wagyu beef with soy glaze and yuzo miso
- Lamb sukiyaki hotpot with truffle and wild garlic
- Matcha and strawberry mille-feuille
On the drinks side, there’s still access to Roketsu’s comprehensive list of more than 70 sakes (two are exclusive imports) and wine, featuring over 500 different brands and 20 by the glass. Sommelier Ryosuke Mashio is also available to suggest drinks pairings.
