There has been much written about the cosy art of Danish ‘hygge’ but at the time of writing, London’s weather is still doing its best frosty Scandi impersonation, so a new Danish steakhouse called KöD in Devonshire Square is worth investigating.
First opening in Denmark’s second-largest city Århus in 2014, Restaurant KöD hopes to bring some Danish vibes via way of juicy steaks to the City (‘köd’ means ‘meat’ in Danish). It’s the first foray outside of Scandinavia for the brand, which has two Copenhagen venues along with a restaurant in Oslo.
The menu fuses the best of Nordic and British cuisine and is a collaboration between KöD’s Danish chefs and Cheshire-born head chef James Durrant, who worked for Gordon Ramsay for eight years at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, Gordon Ramsay at Claridge’s and Maze.
There’s a dedicated Sunday Roast menu as well as careful meat sourcing – choices run the full gamut, from a 35-day-aged grain-fed Uruguay Chateaubriand to the UK’s Freedom Hills olive-fed Wagyu. Apart from the grilled steaks (choice of fillet, ribeye, striploin, Wagyu striploin), all brushed with rosemary and garlic butter and seasoned with fresh herbs and salt flakes, highlights on the menu include:
- KöD tartare: Prime British beef with mustard, shallots, horseradish, capers, chives and tarragon served with smoked garlic cream and Jerusalem artichoke chips
- Cod not KöD: Citrus-cured cod ceviche with capers, smoked roe and herb oil, served with passion fruit vinaigrette with lime, chill, ginger and palm sugar
- Poached lobster with mild chilli, served on crispy pasta and topped with daikon sprouts
Unusually, KöD is open until 2:30am, so earmark this place for your late-night wine flights, pints and cocktails or your lingering celebrations in its private dining rooms. By the night’s end you may be able to pronounce the name, which sounds nothing like ‘cod’, according to our Danish friends (and more like ‘ fuel’ or ‘fool’ to our ears, but do take the challenge).
