Nepalese cuisine isn't something that we have too much of in London (although there are a few classic establishments dotted about) but a new restaurant is looking to change that.
The Gurkhas comes from the same group that's behind Hot Stone and the upcoming Kibako, but expect something quite different for this. The restaurant group's founder, Shrabaneswor Rai, has Gurkha family connections so has wanted to open a Nepalese restaurant for some time.
He's teamed up with Head Chef Joe Allen who also has family connections - his wife is Nepalese, and father-in-law a Gurkha. Allen has travelled across Kathmandu, Chitwan and Pokhara in the planning for the restaurant. It's not his first time cooking the cuisine in London either - he previously launched a three-month pop-up at Hush Mayfair called Kitycow after an appearance on Million Pound Menu.
Food planned for the menu at The Gurkhas includes:
- Kukura ko Jhol Momo - steamed chicken dumplings in a tomato and soybean soup
- Mutton Sekuwa with onion and coriander
- Chargrilled Monkfish Choila and Pork Chop with Sisnu (nettle)
On top of this, they'll be serving Gurkha Pickles and 50p from each of those dishes sold will be donated to aid Gurkha veterans, their families, and communities.
