Indonesian restaurant Toba opens in St James’s Market

If you’ve been lamenting the lack of Indonesian cuisine in London, today is your lucky day. Toba is now open with a soft launch in St James’s Market. If your favourite Indonesian cuisine in London is the Camden street-food stall Pino’s Warung, well, you’ll be extra pleased because Toba is its sister restaurant.

We first alerted you to Pino’s Warung in January 2020, back before the world went a little crazy. Owner Pino Edward Sinaga appears to have braved the past few challenging years in hospitality and branched out to join some of the impressive restaurants in St James’s Market’s growing dining hub, including Fallow and Scully.

Pino is inspired by his late mother’s recipes that he learnt in childhood. What can you expect from a cuisine that spans an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands? There’ll be traditional favourites with a modern twist:

  • Arsik Ikan (cod fillet in torch ginger sauce)
  • Nasi Goreng
  • Beef Renang
  • Chicken Satay

The first few days of the soft launch will be without an alcohol service (though you are welcome to bring your own and pay a corkage fee), but in March Pino hopes to serve some Indonesian-inspired cocktails, such as take on a spicy margarita (the ‘Tobarita’), alongside a selection of wine.
