Oriole Bar makes a (pop-up) comeback at The Hoxton Southwark

Oriole Bar makes a (pop-up) comeback at The Hoxton Southwark

Good news for cocktail aficionados, with the return of Oriole, previously one of the World’s 50 Best Bars, to a new location. After closing its doors on New Year’s Day, as a result of Smithfield Market’s redevelopment and the Museum of London’s relocation, Oriole is hoping to summon its former Farringdon fans just over Blackfriars Bridge to The Hoxton Southwark.

It’s a three-month residency while they're on the hunt for a permanent location (so get those bookings in) at Albie on the mezzanine level, and the speakeasy menu will essentially pick up where things were interrupted, with the Oriole’s splendid celebration of all things Old World, the New World and the Orient. You’ll be serenaded by live jazz, swing and blues while enjoying drinks and paired dishes from the final menu at the original Oriole 1.0 then, as the residency progresses, there’ll be hints of what the speakeasy’s new menu will be at the next (hopefully permanent) Oriole 2.0.

The mood, in both decor and drink, will still very much be ‘bygone era of exploration’ and some cocktails to tantalise you from the well-travelled list include:

  • Svart Strand: vodka, Icelandic moss wine, orange blossom mead, clarified heritage tomato and lemon juice
  • Chachani: tequila, pisco, passionfruit kombucha, hibiscus agua fresca and lime juice
  • Cape Verde: gin, buchu leaf Port, Fino sherry, amaro santoni and pink grapefruit tonic

The all-important small plates will feature the likes of

  • Pork Bun: tamarind, glazed pork belly and kimchi
  • Shrimp Tostada: smoked chipotle, avocado, corn, tuna mayo
  • Guacamole with totopos and pico de gallo
  • Padron peppers with miso and sesame seeds.
