Glitzy Italian restaurant Bocconcino has long been a part of the Mayfair set of dining spots most beloved by footballers and folk who aren't worrying too much about the bill at the end of the meal. They then opened a more affordable version in Soho and next, just as the original restaurant celebrates its tenth anniversary, they're about to try their luck in another area of London, the Strand.
This time, however, they're trying something quite different. Osteria Del Mare will, as the name gives away, be much more about seafood, using Italian seaside town Forte dei Marmi as a direct influence. They'll also have a fresh fish display, from which you'll be able to select seafood like fresh lobster, crab, and turbot.
In charge of the menu here is chef Matteo Massafra, who has spent time in Barrafina, Prada Milano and Cafe Dior. He'll be cooking up dishes like moscardini (octopus) served in red wine sauce as well as paccheri with red mullet. As for drinks, expect a new cocktail list for this space as well as a mainly European wine list.
They're taking over a site underneath the Strand Palace hotel that used to be a bank, around the corner from Joe Allen. Making the most of the building's previous use, they have a prime space for a private dining room, which is set in the bank's old vault (they even kept the vault door).
