5/1/23 - Updated with a new opening date

In Bethlehem, chef and hotelier Fadi Kattan's place of business is in a building that's more than 1000 years old. Here in London, the place he's chosen for his first UK restaurant is a mere 200 years old. The renowned French Palestinian chef is getting ready to open Akub in Notting Hill, where Malabar used to be.

Billed as a modern Palestinian restaurant, Akub is expected to showcase Fadi's progressive take on Palestinian cuisine, taking inspiration from the land between the Jordan River, and the eastern edge of the Mediterranean Sea. We're promised "hot bright salads of the Gaza coastline and deep stews from the rolling hills of Ramallah."

Named after the akub plant (also known as a cardoon) which is a mainstay of Palestinian culinary tradition, and which will be on the menu here, Fadi's London restaurant will use the best of fair trade sourced Palestinian producers alongside that of UK farmers close to London. Dishes include:

  • Freekeh risotto (Charred green wheat, saffron and cream)
  • Arak cured sea bream
  • Grape vine leaves stuffed with skate
  • Dead Sea chocolate cake (Chocolate, sea salt, tahini, caramel, pistachio ice-cream)

Alongside those, expect beers, arak and other spirits from Palestine, including craft beer from Taybeh. The restaurant is spread across three floors, and than includes a basement bar, as well as a covered and heated courtyard.
