A Hot Dinners exclusive
Notting Hill's bakery scene is getting quite the boost. Just days after hearing that Kuro Coffee are opening a Japanese-inspired bakery, comes the news that Hachi will open later in the year. Cravings for Japanese pastries and cakes will soon be sorted, thanks to chef Sachie Worrall, who previously managed a pastry team at the esteemed Nobu Park Lane for a decade.
Sachie has some serious support in the form of the bakery's chef patron Tajii Maruyama, who along with brother and sister duo Andrey and Anastasia Datsenko, is a co-founder of the venture and also behind omakase restaurant Maru in Mayfair and Taka in Marylebone.
If you can count to ten in Japanese, you’ll know Hachi is how to say the number eight, which is a symbolic number for the bakery; they use the numeral’s continuous loop in their orange-hued logo, and chef Sachie also links the design to the enduring relationships she hopes to have with her future customers.
What about the food, you say? Hachi will use premium, preservative-free ingredients along with traditional Japanese baking methods to produce sweet and savoury items, including:
- Shokupan: a classic sweet and fluffy Japanese milk bread, two days in the making
- Curry Pan: fried bread with a pulled pork and curry filling
- Teriyaki Chicken: caramelised onion, teriyaki sauce and mayonnaise
- Matcha Choux: a Choux au Craqulin with matcha cream.
All of which shows that while there’ll be coffee and grab-and-go snacks, Hachi will also be a Notting Hill lunch destination in itself.
