Cedric Grolet launches his take on afternoon tea - Goutea

Cedric Grolet hugely impressed us when he opened on these shores with his patisserie and cafe early this year in The Berkeley. Now the renowned French pastry chef is moving onto the most obvious next step - his take on afternoon tea.

Just kicking off at Cedric Grolet at The Berkeley, it's called "Goutea" - so called because it's a mix of goûter (the French tradition of sweet snacking) and afternoon tea.

The menu is going to change with the seasons, but here's what's on the amazing cake stand you see above. There will be Grolet's famous vanilla flower, a Paris Brest, a pistachio cookie and, of course, a scone with cream and jam. The main (and main Instagram) event will be the trompe-l'œil green apple which, inside, has fresh apple and dill.

For the savoury part, there will be his take on avocado on toast and a trompe-l'œil burrata with tomato gel and basil pesto inside, revealed when it's cut open. And on top of that, a warm mini comté cheese and bacon quiche. There will even be extra madeleines brought through the room during the tea.

As you might imagine, all this doesn't come cheap - it'll be £85 per person, putting it some way above the Ritz which is 'just' £67 and the Pan Pacific which, at £72 was the most expensive we could find. But it's clearly aiming to be one of the London afternoon teas that you ought to try...
