Covent Garden’s Royal Opera House opens its Piazza restaurant to all

Covent Garden’s Royal Opera House opens its Piazza restaurant to all

22/9/22 - Updated with photos of the restaurant

If you’re looking for a restaurant rooftop view that your mates aren’t talking about yet, then plan a little cultural jaunt to Covent Garden’s Royal Opera House. But if culture is not your thing, worry not. For the first time, you won’t need to be in possession of opera or ballet tickets to gain access to the Piazza restaurant on its fifth-floor terrace.

The interior of the restaurant is having a bit of a refresh, thanks to interior designer Naomi Cleaver, but the main drawcard is the architectural splendour of this landmark building and indeed the panoramic views across Covent Garden.

If you can tear your eyes away from that and to your plate, the food offerings from Executive Chef Richard Robinson (previously at Tom’s Kitchen, The French Laundry, and Per Se) are on a brand-new menu that focuses on seasonality and sustainability. In addition to a ‘catch of the day’ there’s an in-house butchery providing a ‘butcher’s cut’, focusing on lesser-known cuts of meat, as well as trims and offcuts to reduce waste in starters and snacks. Their suppliers come with a lot of cred: James Knight of Mayfair (The Queen’s fishmongers), Cobble Lane for charcuterie and Paxton & Whitfield for cheese.

Sample dishes include:

  • London burrata and heritage beetroots;
  • Pershore broccoli with citrus and pine nuts; and
  • Lemon sole, English sparkling wine and mushroom.

As for drinks, all wines are supplied by Ellis wines, a 200-year-old independent, family-owned business. There are also bespoke cocktails that could even make you feel somewhat virtuous with their food-waste-recycling intentions, with Parsnips & Pears being a riff on a bourbon cocktail that incorporates pear liqueur, parsnip juice, lemon and honey.

So if you're in the area and looking for an escape (or just a look inside the Royal Opera House) this could be well worth seeking out.
