Updated 31/8/22 with soft launch details
It feels like we're living through a boom period of amazing neighbourhood bakeries opening in London. The next area to get a great bakery landing on their doorstep is Lower Holloway.
Artisan baker Michelle Eshkeri opened Margot Bakery in East Finchley in 2016 and it's since become one of North London's most popular bakeries, winning Michelle plaudits for her sourdough bread and pastries. Everything from her challah to babka and croissants is leavened with sourdough and there's also a regularly changing menu of cakes and other sweet treats.
Now she's expanding the business, taking over an old metalworks just off Holloway Road. That sounds about right, as her now bustling East Finchley bakery was a year-long passion project to take a dilapidated shop and bring it back to life.
News of the new bakery was met with delight from Michelle's many fans, including food writer Diana Henry who told us: "Usually I have to get the bus to East Finchley to buy her stuff, so I'm thrilled that her next place is a bit nearer the centre, albeit still North. Those who have never tasted her baking should be looking forward to slices of the apple cake (practically a pudding but you can have it for breakfast), almond croissants and the wonderful rye bread. She is always trying something new so you will never get bored."
We don't know much about plans for the Holloway site other than its name and address. But we do know that, in addition to being somewhere where she can bake bread and sell it, there'll also be room for classes and other events.
We'll bring you more news as we get it.
