Updated 5/7/22 with opening date and soft launch info
Irish chef Robin Gill is keeping himself nicely busy this summer. In an announcement today, one day before the opening of his new Kensington restaurant, Maria G's, Gill revealed that he and his wife Sarah also have a Brixton wine bar waiting in the wings to open.
Bottle & Rye on Brixton Row is going to be a pretty teeny affair - with room for just 28 inside - and is inspired by the Parisian wine bar scene. "We love how these little gems are embraced by the city," says Robin, adding: "I’m very excited to be opening my first restaurant in Brixton, an area where I’ve lived for most of my London life.”
Robin (who also owns Darby's, the Bermondsey Larder and Rye by the Water) has brought in ex-Lino chef Ben Hughes-Gage to head up the kitchen here. The menu sounds on point with dishes including:
- Ogleshield Gougères with Pickled Walnut
- Vichyssoise Oyster Tartare; Smoked Eel
- Brandade with Pink Fir Crisps and Provençal Herbs
- Brixton folk keeping a keen eye out for new brunch options will want to head here to try the weekend offering with options like Poached Cacklebean Eggs with Boudin Noir along with Croque Madames.
Obviously the wine list has had a lot of thought with Lewis Wright, one of Gill's long-term collaborators, working on it. We're told that will focus on minimal intervention wines from across Europe and - the really good news - glasses will start at as low as £5.
