Scottish expats pining for a taste of home outside of Burns Night now have a new place of pilgrimage. Edinburgh's Makars Gourmet Mash Bar has just opened its first spot outside Scotland, in Covent Garden.
Founder John Stamp says the restaurant was inspired by his granny's food and it's all about using the best Scottish ingredients. To that end, all their meat and veg is sourced from local farms.
A quick look at the menu reveals it is very Scottish with options like a rare breed pork Scotch Egg to start, mini haggis, neeps and tattie taster and Scottish oyster mushrooms in Irn-Bru BBQ sauce. It also features - we kid you not - Bonnie Prince Charlie chargrilled chicken in a whisky sauce.
As the name suggests, mash is a big part of the offering with nine options available from the classic through to mash with Stornoway black pudding or a vegan olive oil mash. The whole thing might sound like a massive tourist trap but a quick squizz at TripAdvisor suggests otherwise with a stellar five-star rating from satisfied customers.
