Ynyshir voted as the UK's best restaurant (with Brat at no. 3) - see the top 100 here

Gareth Ward's Ynyshir in Wales has long been a highly praised restaurant and now it's finally made its way right to the top of the 100 restaurants picked for this year's National Restaurant Awards. Not only is it top of the pile, but it also marks the first time a restaurant outside England has topped the list.

Last year's No 1 moves only one place down the list, while Brat is the capital's highest placing on the list at No 3 (up from No 7 last year). It's particularly good news for Chet Sharma's Bibi too - that enters the list at No 5, a pretty impressive achievement.

Other new London entries include Adejoké Bakare's Chishuru, Trivet, Russell Norman's Brutto, Fallow, Mangal 2 and a notably high re-entry and No 6 for The Ledbury. It's also good news for The Ritz which jumps from 44 last year to No 4 this year.

Out of the full top 100 list, 61 of the restaurants are in London (and seven of the top 10). That's the largest percentage for a while (there were only 48 last year).

Of the special categories of the night, here's who went home with an award:

  • Chef of the Year: Simon Rogan, Umbel Restaurant Group
  • Restaurateur of the Year Dan and Natasha Smith, The Fordwich Arms and The Bridge Arms
  • Chef to Watch: Spencer Metzger
  • Opening of the Year: BiBi
  • One to Watch, sponsored by Woods Foodservice: Lisboeta
  • The Sustainability Award: Where The Light Gets In
  • Gastropub of the Year: The Angel at Hetton
  • The Service Award: The Ritz
  • Wine List of the Year: Noble Rot Soho
  • Cocktail List of the Year: KOL
  • Food Lovers Award: Oxwich
  • Lifetime Achievement Award: Ruth Rogers, The River Café.
