Get your chicken puns ready, Mother Clucker is setting up a restaurant in Islington, having previously found fame as a street-food truck in 2013 and then a UK-nationwide delivery service in 2021.
You may recall we reported on their first bricks-and-mortar home back in 2018, when Mother Clucker set up shop in Exmouth Market.
The team behind the next move is Famously Proper Ltd (who also happen to be the people behind Byron Burgers), who acquired Mother Clucker in 2021. Islington is the place to settle down at a communal table and get the tea-brined, buttermilk soaked, crispy-fried delights that have garnered them a cult following. There’s no need for vegans to shy away, either, as there will be a full menu mirroring every dish that will be completely vegan friendly.
The restaurant also prides itself on a sustainable ethos, with 70% of the fixings, fittings and furniture being upcycled or recycled. The beady-eyed Mother Clucker fan may even spot a few trinkets from the original street-food truck. If you’re still not ready to concede that Mother Clucker is no longer a grab-and-go concept, fear not; there’ll be hot lockers for you to pick up your takeaway order when you phone in advance.
On the menu, you can expect:
- Chicken burgers, strips, wings and wraps
- WOWffles: buttermilk waffles topped with either crispy fried chicken, candied bacon and maple syrup or ice cream with a choice of gummy chicken feet (!), marshmallows, honeycomb or fresh berries
- Accompaniments of fries (with cajun/filthy/cheese toppings), tots, gravy, tangy and hot sauces
On the drinks side of things, there are milkshakes and chilled beer. We’re going to visit just to see how they replicate a vegan version of gummy chicken feet, but you’ll all have your own reasons.
