19/5/22 - Updated with the opening date
There was some concerned murmuring in Wimbledon Village when much-loved French restaurant The White Onion announced its closure on Instagram just last week. The good news is the site won’t be empty long, with the Gladwin Brothers to open their latest venture, called The Black Sheep.
If you’re new to the Gladwin story, as the name suggests, they’re three brothers (a farmer, a chef and a restaurateur) who started a business in 2012 with a concept called Local & Wild. Menus at their restaurants often feature high-welfare meat from their farm, wines from the family vineyard in Sussex and a strong focus on sustainably sourced British produce.
The Black Sheep will be their sixth restaurant, following hot on the heels of The Fat Badger in Richmond, Rabbit in Chelsea, Nutbourne in Battersea, and The Shed in Notting Hill. So they've been rather busy.
Planned for the menu is:
- Wye valley grilled asparagus, crispy duck egg, roasted flaked almonds
- Pan-fried scallop, confit chicken wing, elderflower gel, sorrel
- Sweet cured confit hogget shoulder, foraged wild garlic, anchovies and white bean salsa.
- Salted caramel viennetta parfait.
They'll also have a plant-led set menu during the week, featuring dishes like garden peas, mint gel, whey cheese and Nutbourne tomato
And extra-good news for oenophiles, if you’re looking for an ideal spot to get your WSET, they’ll be hosting these courses in partnership with The Wimbledon Wine School.
